Gratefulness for Johnny Depp and Public Enemies Columbus...

Another fun night at the Kurth!

My newish friend Jenny and I were talking last night about how it's not much fun to blog when it's all sad stuff these days. As we talked and laughed with all the other Public Enemies Bloggers I realized I was having a good time and did have much to be grateful for despite all the heartache. So here's to you Jenny... = )

It all started with Johnny Depp...

Actually it started with heartache and despair and ended with JD. The trouble didn't end, but me not living my life did. Late last fall so many hard things happened all at the same time that I kind of lost my way for a while. Usually when times get tough I just withdraw for a bit, read a good book, get quiet and re centered and then I can face the hard stuff again. This time, I couldn't even READ, I couldn't find a way to connect with that quiet place where things heal.

During those days I ran across a listing of JD's films and realized there were TONS of them I'd somehow missed! (It was hard to believe since I'd been fan since the Jump Street days) I began to hunt them down one by one which in itself was sometimes tough to do. I think I finally got a copy of The Brave from Romania or Chzechoslovachia or somewhere like that! I can't read anything on the cover, but it plays well. = )

As I watched film after film I was astounded at the choices he had made and at his integrity in making them. I imagined he had gone through some dark days as well or he could never have played some of those characters the way he did. In the end his choices paid off, and he's in a way responsible for helping me sense that though the choices I've made (with integrity and good intentions) haven't paid off yet they will, in time... I'm encouraged to continue.

Somewhere around the time I watched the last one, I heard that Johnny Depp would be making a new movie based on the life of John Dillinger, and would be shooting it right here in WI!!! Within days of my hearing this I found that filming had already begun and I got my first introduction to Columbus through Rod's Blog!!!

Nothing has been the same since!

I think I have fallen in love with Columbus, at the very least I have a BIG crush on her! I didn't make it to Columbus for the first round of filming, but through the blog I've been able to follow the filming all around the Stateline area and even Up North as well as make some great new friends. I've stood within 5 feet of Johnny! I've gotten to take part in advocating for "The Auditorium" and hang out at The Kurth getting to know my new buds. = )

Last night I got to FINALLY meet two of my online friends who have re-taught me things I'd lost touch with. ScrapiKathy, thanks for being so brave and helping me to tap into that courage that's always been a part of me. And Suz, thanks so much for your kindness and generosity and for reconnecting me with gratefulness... = ) I got to meet the delightful "miss m" (can't say Miss M or I'd have to share Rod's Fish of April) and Sue, and Kris and Terry, and tick tick tick aka: Tracey... = )

Last and certainly not least, it's always pure joy hanging out with Michelle and Rod and DJ and Jenny... DJ, you are amazing (yes, I have a crush on her too... Get your mind out of the gutter, it's not that kind of crush)! Last night she handed me this awesome Kurth's hoodie which I am wearing right now as I type over my jammies! Yes, that is JD over my shoulder, another long story... and YES, I have much to be grateful for...

It's me, Lotus, from the PE Columbus blog. I read your blog and just had to say SOMETHING. It had me on the verge of tears, and that is not easy to do. (Except, my daughter will tell you I cry at commercials!) I don't know what you've been through, but I can empathize because we all have THOSE bad times. If we haven't so far, then our time is coming. I know you will be fine because you ARE STRONG! Hey, you're a female swabee (sp?)! You were a strong woman BEFORE it became popular!

I wish you well with the adoption. The girls are BEAUTIFUL. If you ever need someone to talk to about being part of a bi-racial family in a sometimes hostile country/state/region/city/town (you get my drift), hey, I'm your girl (old bag)! :)

shakenbsis said...

Thanks Lotus!

I think you may 'get' me in more ways than one. = ) I really appreciate your kind thoughts as well as all your FUN comments over at Rod's place.

They ARE beautiful aren't they?? = )

Lotus said...

P.S. Don't ever say you are a "failure at celebrity stalking,' because I have that dubious distinciton all to myself! You got some great pictures AND you got to see that JD is an actual LIVING, BREATHING PERSON and not some computer animated Hollywood cyber what-ever-or-other. I took 3 days vacation and went to Little Bo and other than pictures of white trucks and blurry black vehicles, I got diddly-squat! So I think I'm the bigget failure. And I got tired and went home afte one day. :) As we say in the military, "shake it, don't break it!"

Lotus said...

YES THEY ARE!!!

shakenbsis said...

LOTUS! You've got me laughing sooo hard right now. I haven't heard any of our military talk in sooo long now, really takes me back!

Lotus said...

Weel, if that had you laughing, here's an oldie but goodie. I hope no one else is reading this. But if they are this isn't for children! Go to bed, it's late!!!

One of my favorite sayings, which took me a while to figure out because I was young and "didn't get around," so to speak, is "one eyed trouser trout." The first time I heard this I figured I knew what they were talking about, so I didn't let on that I didn't. But, what the heck, I'd never seen a one-eyed trout in my life! And I'd done A LOT of fishing!!!

I knew that walleye had an eye set on the far sides of their heads, and I'd caught fish by hook in the eye, but this one eyed trouser trout was a new breed of fish to me! Unfortunately, it didn't stay unknown to me for long. :) You've heard the joke about all women's problems starting with men...menstruation, mental health, menopause, etc.

Lotus said...

Well, I suppose I had better hop over to the PE Cbus blog and annoy somebody there. Good night and "LIGHTS OUT!"

Working Slob said...

Popped over as I heard you were rocking over here. What a beautiful post and the girls are beautiful!!!

Hope to make it to the Kurth someday. Michelle keeps telling me I'm missing a great time.

May all your hopes and dreams come true,

Rachel :)

shakenbsis said...

You are TOO funny LOL!!! yes, I'd heard that but it's been a loooong while... good night to you friend!

shakenbsis said...

Hey Rachel,
LOVE the new profile pic. I have a friend who always uses a chimp of some sort = ) I thought it was a squirrel at first with my old eyes!
thanks for your kind thoughts...

Working Slob said...

Thanks!! I LOVE orangutans. I could sit and watch them for hours. This is the one year old baby at the Milwaukee zoo. So cute :)

shakenbsis said...

Now I have to say, awwwwww...
Did you go over there to see it? Do they have a webcam?

Working Slob said...

I went to free day a few weeks ago at the zoo with my goddaughter and it happened to be the same day as this little ones birthday. (I wish I knew its name) Anyway, I'm not sure they have a webcam at Milwaukee or not. I do go to the Madison zoo a lot and watch the orangs there.

I haven't been there in awhile as well, I have JD on the brain. I hope they forgive me for being so neglectful :)

dj said...

Shakenbsis!! I told you, you were so sweet! I love yours (and Johnny's) pic! :)

What is that one saying?? Something like "A heart can break, but it still keeps on a beating?" That's really it, isn't it? Life sometimes hits us HARD but we always seem to make it back up on our feet! SOMEHOW!!! :)

You deserve so much happiness...and...don't forget--OUR MOMENT!! KEEPING THE FAITH!! LOL :)

dj said...

Rachel...I saw your orangutan! So cute!!! :)

shakenbsis said...

thanks dj!!!

yes, it DOES keep on beating! Sometimes that's the trouble = )
Seriously though, you've brought me a lot of joy in these past weeks.

Is this your vocal kitty??? = )

Working Slob said...

That is the coolest thing about all this PE stuff. I have met the best people ever! It certainly couldn't have come at a better time in life either :)

shakenbsis said...

I think they'll forgive you Rachel.

I used to have a membership at the San Diego Zoo. I miss going to the zoo. I remember when I was a litle girl my aunt used to take me to see Samson. I don't remember if he was at Madison or Milwaukee though and I'm sure he's passed on by now. (I think he was a baboon though)

shakenbsis said...

PS: I'm glad the timeing is good for you too! = )

Anonymous said...

I remember when I was a litle girl my aunt used to take me to see Samson.

Are you referring to Samson the gorilla at the Milwaukee Zoo? I used to love going to see him! :)

Working Slob said...

Sampson, I believe was a beautiful gorilla (not sure if lowland or highland)! Does that bring back memories of being a kid. He was at the Milwaukee zoo I believe.

If you are ever in Madison and want to go to the zoo we should meet up. I went with Michelle and Julia and we had a BLAST!!!

dj said...

Rachel...you must come on down to the Kurth... you will definitely be among Friends!!! :)

The kitty in my pic is little Sierra.....she's a good girl. It her kitty-bruver, Milo who is the complete nut-job, but I love him anyway!!He's a lover boy. He's outside on the prowl as we speak!

SAMSON! OMG I remember him--he was at the Milwaukee zoo!! He was a gorilla..I'm pretty sure--yeah I think he is gone. I would love to go to the San Diego Zoo.

shakenbsis said...

OMG yes! YOu can see I'm not very good with my specie names!! We used to beg her all the time to "GO see SAMSON!"

Lotus said...

cranky anon:

Don't take this the wrong way, but I thought you were a guy! Well, if you're a woman, you have every RIGHT to be cranky. So go forth and crankanate!

Working Slob said...

I think everyone in Wisconsin loved Samson (too cute).

To be young again :)

Anonymous said...

Samson was a lowland

shakenbsis said...

Rachel, ditto what dj said.

Cranky! I love that you call yourself that... that's me sooo many days, cranky! LOL maybe I should jsut embrace it??? = )

Anonymous said...

LOL. Nope, I'm a chick.

I am woman hear me CRANK!

shakenbsis said...

OMG Cranky - You gave me chills with that link!!!

Lotus said...

OOOPs. Sorry, cranky anon, I just noticed you were quoting shakenbsis's statement. And you could still be a guy. I apologize if I have offended. See, shakenbsis, this is why I have no friends.

Working Slob said...

LOL!!! I love cranky anon!! Embrace the crankiness :)

Thanks for the invites to the Kurth and the gang. I will have to check it out one of these weeks. It looks like the group is getting bigger, will it outgrow the Kurth?

Kathy said...

I just checked in to the PE blog, and I hate feeling left out, so here I am.

I am in awe over all the wonderful people I have met through Rod's blog and how it seems many of us have had some bad times. It's almost bizarre!

I am still smiling about the trout, and all the military talk. And I remember Sampson, too! I never got to see him, my parents didn't take us anywhere, but I think every child I knew had seen him.

I hope to see some more PE people this week in Columbus - this is the highlight of 2008 for me, I'm sure!

shakenbsis said...

Hi Kathy! = )

Working Slob said...

I wish I would have known about that exhibit cranky posted. That was just how I remembered him.

Welcome to the party Kathy. This is what the cool kids do on Saturday nights :)

Anonymous said...

Awww, Rach - love you too babe! :)

No, Lotus, you have not offended. *hugs*

Lotus said...

OH, thank GOD or GODDESS! I also loved the site about Samson. Thanks for the link. I think I went to see him at the zoo with some cousins when I was a child, BUT I had such an imagination that I probably made it up.

dj said...

Cranky Anonymous: Ooops OMG I think..did I give you that name!!!? LOL (sorry) I actually like it! HEY YOU DON'T SEEM SO CRANKY!! :)

LOL :)

shakenbsis said...

I love it, we are women after all... = )

Lotus said...

Hey, shakenbsis, I just checked and you have SURPASED Rob's blog on this lovely evening. He only has 32 posts! You go girl!!! Apparently, this is the HIP and IN place to be. :)

Working Slob said...

Its all about having a little fun. If you can't have fun with yourself, who can you have fun with.

Look at what Lotus started over here. Party at Shakenbsis. (That's a hard one)

Question for you shaken - I think it was you the other day that was talking about in Haiti that photos are considered taking a piece of someone with you (if I remember correctly). I thought that was really cool!

Lotus said...

OK, this blog just weems to keep on growing. Will I be able to get a seat here next week?

Rod said...

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE!

I step away from the computer for one tiny day and someone is stealing my thunder.

I WAS WARNED ABOUT YOU KIND OF PEOPLE.

Yea - well - now I will be forced to post a photo of . . . . A FLOWER tomorrow - how do you like DEM apples.

Lotus said...

OK, I have to lay off on the Sherry. Ah, what the hell, I couldn't type before, either!

Working Slob said...

Rod,

The theme of tonights discussion is Samson the gorilla. You should post a pic of him in honor of Shaken's takeover :)

shakenbsis said...

OMG!! Walk away for one minute to go to the bathroom and all hell breaks loose!!

SORRY ROD!!! (bowing down humble)

TNTPMP!!!!!

M said...

Hey! I just figured out you had a blog! I enjoyed sitting by you last night and hope you didn't mind being pelted with popcorn. I'm a slob.

I have been reading your blog entries and I'm very moved. Your warmth as a person is very apparent-- even during a brief meeting-- and it's great to get to know a little more about you here. Hope to see you again soon!

I grew up near Milwaukee and saw Samson countless times. That link above, pic #3 is SO HIM. He was the coolest. Probably influenced my taste in men, actually... especially the nonchalant chest-scratching.

-Mary

Lotus said...

Rod, you are so COOL man! And brave! I don't know of many men who would come into a room (chat) full of women (some with military experience) and fluctuating hormones and say, well, anything AT ALL! FYI: I earned my EXPERT badge in markMANship. :)

shakenbsis said...

OH Rachel,

I jsut saw your 10:31 post yes, that is true. It's like you are stealing a piece of their soul or something...

Working Slob said...

Well, I'm happy to say that I now have a piece of JD's wonderful soul with me then. I can only hope I can be half as wonderful and giving as him.

shakenbsis said...

Hi Mary!

It was fun getting to know you too. I appreciate your kind words and no worries, Jenny and I thought we had the record on spilling popcorn!

Who knew we all had Samson in common???

shakenbsis said...

I hope so too Rachel, I'm taking notes. I have much to learn form JD in the area of graciousness...

Working Slob said...

Samson and JD. Who would have thought?

Lotus said...

As I have read, the early Native Americans believed the same thing...that you took thier soul if you took a picture. But, if you think about it, a picture or a blog posting does open the person up and someone else is taking thier information (soul). So, I do believe. I love seeing old pictures from the 1800's, early 1900's; I always wonder what was going through thier minds.

shakenbsis said...

Wow Lotus, I didn't know that. Maybe it's somthing that happens in lots of cultures. very interesting...

Kathy said...

I am still laughing! I also stepped away from the puter and all hell DID break lose!

And Sampson - Rachel I have to get a better look at your picture there.

Working Slob said...

I think you can now declare your blog the number one source for Samson fangirls :)

shakenbsis said...

It's funny things got a little wild there for a minute! I was laughing so hard the cat was looking at me like i sprouted wings or something...

Lotus said...

Not to be an a**, or anything, but I think it has more to do with cultures that have not been exposed to the more modern inventions. Everyone is leary of what they do not understand. Look at me, for instance. Several years ago I would not surf the web, let alone put anything on a blog! I figured you're just asking for trouble. :) But now, well...

shakenbsis said...

I feel like I should make some Tarzan (I mean Jane) noises or something!

Kathy said...

The asking for trouble part still is daunting when I blog.

But hey, if we can't have the truth, we'll all be led to believe that June Cleaver is the reality we want.

I am thinking that you have no idea what I'm talking about! sorry

shakenbsis said...

Hey Kathy - I'm thinking I get you pretty good. = )
You make me smile. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it can't hurt any worse than keeping up the facade...

I get in trouble when I blog too, but I try to keep it real!

Rod said...

LOL - I'm glad someone could take the torch for a while - my arm was getting tired.

ESPECIALLY after an email I received that reamed me over the coals for blurting out informations.

IT'S NOT A GAME you know! EVAN FOR PEOPLE IN MAYBERRY!

Lotus said...

kathy:

I still think I may be asking for trouble, so I undertand where you are coming from. But at my age and with the residual pent-up anger I have over THOSE times in life, I figure, GO FOR IT! I think women, in general, have so much pent-up anger, that snyone should think twice about upsetting them.

Kathy said...

I remember trying to make the Tarzan noise as a kid! Can't do it now or people would wake up.

dj said...

Okay I've lost it. I thought I was here and posted on Rod's blog to you guys!! DUH.

I guess its getting late.

Lotus said...

Glad to see you back, Rod. Tell us something about life that only a man would know. (Believe me when I say, I don't hate men. I used to, but now they only mildly iritate me.)

Kathy said...

Rod, who is bothering you? Us gals over here can do our tarzan or Jane voices and send 'em
running.

Betty, you get me, don't you?@! and Lotus hit the nail on the head. The residual anger can't be left hanging around - let it out! No more facades - there is no Mayberry or June Cleaver. Or a Tarzan or a Jane, either!

Rod said...

OK - here is a man only thing.

No matter how you shake and dance

The last few drops go in your pants!

shakenbsis said...

OMG! now I'm not sure which blog I'm on! Mayberry!

Kathy - Let er rip girl!!! I think we are all getting each other tonight...

Working Slob said...

I see what you mean about stepping away for a minute... wowy!!!

Rod said...

Did I say that out loud?

shakenbsis said...

OH Rod, now I'm laughing and crying adn trying not to pee my pants!!!

shakenbsis said...

dj - I see what you mean about not jsut the animal being a little touched!

Lotus said...

Ha, ha, ha....!!! Rod, you reminded me that I have to go to the bathroom. But if I go, I'll miss all of this! Gotta go anyway!

Rod said...

I'll have a rebuttal to "The Mayberry Letter" tomorrow.

I;m sure it is way easier to be on location in Chicago then it is In Columbus when our extra 500 people watching, pushing and shoving each other, cat fights breaking out and scratching.

Mothers save your daughters from the horror, oh the horror.

Rod said...

"Rod, you reminded me that I have to go to the bathroom."

Oddly I get that a lot from people and it worries me!

Lotus said...

I agree, Rod, if someone is giving you grief they are giving us all grief. And, may I say, it's pretty cool when the host of the blog we have hi-jacked comes over to this blog.

Lotus said...

You should take that as a compliment, Rod. You are helping a lot of people synchrinize (sp?) thier bodily functions. When people see me, they think "I forgot to flush!"

dj said...

Shakenbsis: Yes, I've always loved Rod's poetry..!!

LOL

I think I'm gonna pack it in for the night!! Good night--sleep tight!!

dj

Lotus said...

Hey, where'd everybody go?

Lotus said...

OK, I don't want to be a pain, BUT, we only need 7 more posts to hit 100. After this one, we only need 6. And, I'll do them all by myself if I have to. But, help me out ladies, I bore myself even.

Lotus said...

Goodnight, Rod, you prince of PE. See you tomorrow.

Lotus said...

shakenbsis, I greatly enjoyed myself this evening and I hope you did, also. It was fun dishing with the ladies.

Lotus said...

Rod, I just noticed that that Prince of PE statement was like a double entondre, given your poem this evening. :)

Lotus said...

shakenbsis, if you're still awake, you should take number 100. It's only appropriate.

Lotus said...

As a great greeting card once said, "Don't kiss your honey if your nose is runny, you might think it's funny, but it's snot!"

Thanks so much for tonight, you're a BLAST!

Don't cry Osh, we'll do it again, I'm sure. Bless you sweet girl. I'd say sweet dreams, but I had strange ones after I watched Sweeney Todd... = )

Lotus said...

Good night shakenbsis and osh. Rest well.

I totally missed the party last night, but you are always in my thoughts, Shakenbsis. Your girls are lovely and you all deserve one another. I truly hope you will be together someday soon. Big hugs to you, friend!

It has been wonderful to meet you -- I will have to sit closer at the next Kurth excursion so we can chat a bit more!

Working Slob said...

Lotus, do you sleep ? :)

Wow! I fall asleep for a few hours and look at what happens! You really partied over here.

I had a great time last night over here.

So, what will be the topic today?

Suz said...

Suuure, I worked, then slept, then showered, and now I'm off to work again.

I miss all the fun!

(pouts)

;)

I'll read tonight!!

Suz said...

Oh! And remember those wax mold things you could get in the Milwaukee Zoo gift shop of the gorilla? You watched the machine make it while you waited! That was supposed to be Sampson, wasn't it?

He's an icon, for sure. :)

Working Slob said...

I totally remember those! I think I saw some when I was there with my goddaughter a few weeks ago.

So, do I see a zoo roadtrip in the future?

Kathy said...

I can't believe I missed the PE Prince's comment about the shake & the dance! I thought I was all laughed out last night, and here I am catching up on what happened after 11pm - I'm giggling all over again!

Sorry, God, but I am really glad I missed church today. Thanks for the laughs! Making my day, AGAIN!

Shakenbsis, I hope you figure out if you have a crush or not. You'll have to come to Kurth's again and find out! Can't wait to chat more with all you lovely people!

My name is Rachel and I am addicted to blogging! HELP ME!

Kathy said...

And I forgot to mention how funny it was that you were determined to get to 100 posts, Lotus!

Lotus said...

rachel, I think there is a 12-step program available for bloggers. It's an open blog spot on the internet. Unfortunately, no one seems to have improved. :(

Lotus said...

kathy, I'm kind of anal retentive that way. Once I got it in my head, I couldn't let it go!

Working Slob said...

Someone needs to tell me to a responsible 32 year old and clean up my house :)

Lotus said...

rachel, be a responsible 32 year old and hire someone to clean up your house. :) Then you'd have more time for blogging! Oh, and for the 12-step program.

Working Slob said...

LOL!!!!! That's right.

shakenbsis said...

I am so sorry we have lost touch in the recent years, but I'm also thankful that we have re-connected and I have always had you in my thoughts. Reading of your girls, knowing alittle more about the situation, my heart goes out to you more and more. I would like you to remember that I am here for you for whatever you need and any support I can offer, please just ask. I don't want to get all sappy, but you know where my heart lies when it comes to children and my friends! You are awesome B!!!!
